Ndindi Nyoro Revolutionizes Education with KSh 500 Fees and “Chapati Fridays”

The academic landscape of Murang’a County has undergone a seismic shift following the official launch of the 2026 Kiharu Masomo Bora Programme by MP Ndindi Nyoro. In a bold move aimed at achieving 100% transition and retention rates, the programme has slashed school fees from KSh 1,000 to a record low of KSh 500 per term. This directive applies to all 65 day secondary schools within the constituency, ensuring that the burden of education is lifted from the shoulders of struggling families as they navigate the 2026 school year.

Recognizing that academic excellence is fueled by proper nutrition, the Masomo Bora initiative has integrated a robust feeding programme into the school day. Students are now guaranteed a consistent menu featuring githeri and rice, with the much-loved “Chapati Fridays” serving as a morale booster. By providing these meals free of charge, the programme addresses the core issue of food insecurity, which has historically been a major cause of absenteeism in rural and peri-urban day schools.

The financial backbone of this revolution is a targeted allocation of over KSh 50 million from the NG-CDF, specifically earmarked for infrastructure and modern learning tools. Beyond the fee subsidies, the programme has capped remedial fees at KSh 1,000 and banned all unauthorized levies. To ensure schools remain operational hubs of talent, each institution will receive KSh 50,000 for sports, while the NG-CDF takes over the insurance and maintenance costs of school buses, further thinning the operational costs that usually trickle down to parents.

To maintain a high standard of education, the MP has introduced an aggressive incentive scheme for the “captains” of these institutions. Top-performing teachers are set to be rewarded with fully paid vacations to Mombasa, while principals who lead their schools to national recognition will benefit from international study tours to educational hubs like Dubai and Malaysia. This 360-degree approach—caring for the student’s stomach, the parent’s wallet, and the teacher’s motivation—positions the Kiharu model as a benchmark for local leadership across the country.
