IEBC Launches Mega Voter Registration Drive – Targets 6.3 Million New Voters Ahead of 2027
Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has officially hit the streets today, rolling out a nationwide voter registration blitz targeting a whopping 6.3 million fresh voters ahead of the 2027 General Election. And guess who they’re eyeing? 👉 The youth.
The campaign, flagged off in Kajiado, will cover all 290 constituencies, with Huduma Centres and voter registration tents buzzing Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
💸 With a jaw-dropping Ksh57.3 billion budget for 2027, IEBC has set aside Ksh8B just for registration, plus billions more for replacing its ageing KIEMS kits and tightening data systems.
“A credible register is the heartbeat of free and fair polls,” declared IEBC boss Erastus Ethekon.
But critics aren’t keeping quiet — the Opposition is already grilling IEBC over procurement links with firms like Smartmatic and demanding proof that this time, the system won’t crash or be compromised.
⚡ Who qualifies?
✔️ Kenyan citizens aged 18+
✔️ Must have a valid ID or passport
❌ No registering if convicted of election-related crimes in the last 5 years
❌ Declared “unsound mind”? You’re out
🌍 For Kenyans abroad, only passports will count — except East Africans, who can register with IDs.
The numbers are clear: with over 22.1 million already on the roll, this push could make the youth vote the kingmaker in 2027. Politicians better start sweating — because these new voters may decide who takes State House next!
