Parents to Pay Ksh69 Million for Riot Damage at Litein Boys High School

Parents of students at Litein Boys High School in Kericho County will pay a collective fine of Ksh69 million to repair massive destruction caused during a recent student riot. Restoration works are expected to commence before schools reopen later this month.

According to a statement from the Board of Management (BoM), engineers from the State Department of Public Works valued the total damage at nearly Ksh100 million. Parents will shoulder Ksh69,578,795, while the BoM will raise Ksh30 million, partly through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF). The fine translates to Ksh49,699 per student, to be paid before readmission.

“All students must be accompanied by their parents on reopening day, after which a general parents’ meeting will be held,” the board said.

The unrest, which occurred two weeks ago, led to the arrest of eight students, who have since been charged with arson, burglary, and malicious damage. Investigators also recovered stolen property, including laptops and teachers’ personal items.

Authorities have dismissed reports that the riot was sparked by a dispute over football screening, instead linking it to a confrontation between the administration and individuals allegedly involved in KCSE exam leak cartels.

Police are investigating claims that outsiders looted the school during the chaos, making away with food supplies and electronics.

Parents have until October 6, 2025, to deposit the fines to facilitate repairs. The school will reopen in phases: Form Two on October 9, Form Three on October 13, and Form Four on October 16.

Principal Richard Sang, who also serves as BoM secretary, confirmed that reopening will be gradual, with only senior students allowed to bring all their belongings.
