Talanta Stadium Hits 60% Mark in Race for AFCON 2027!

Nairobi is about to get a sporting monument! Construction of the massive 60,000-seat Talanta Stadium has officially blown past the 60% completion mark, turning what was once a blueprint into a spectacular reality.

This colossal KSh 44 billion facility is Kenya’s key weapon in the joint bid to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Uganda and Tanzania. The pressure is on, and officials are pushing for a high-stakes handover by December 2025—a deadline that will determine if the stadium is match-ready for the continental showcase.

The New Home of Kenyan Football

The Talanta project, a flagship initiative under President William Ruto’s youth development agenda, is being hailed as a major boost for Kenyan sports infrastructure. When finished, it promises a world-class arena capable of hosting top-tier football and athletics events, finally giving the Harambee Stars the home turf they deserve.

While the progress is undeniable, the project hasn’t escaped the sidelines banter. Critics have pointed to construction delays and questioned the KSh 44 billion budget priorities, especially against the backdrop of ongoing university strikes. But for many fans, seeing the steel and concrete rise is a tangible sign that Kenya is serious about reclaiming its spot on the international sports stage.

The Naming Debate: Honoring a Legend

The biggest controversy currently swirling around the venue isn’t about the turf or the seating—it’s the name. Following the unfortunate passing of political stalwart Raila Odinga on October 15, 2025, passionate supporters have launched a fierce campaign to rename the venue in his honour.

They argue that celebrating the national leader’s legacy by dedicating the stadium to him would be a fitting tribute. Opponents, however, insist the focus should remain on delivering the promised sporting infrastructure first, citing the existence of other named facilities and the need to prioritize stability over political symbolism.

Regardless of what name graces the entrance, one thing is certain: a masterpiece of a stadium is rising in Nairobi. The countdown is officially on for the biggest sporting event East Africa has seen in generations!
