Sifuna and Babu Owino Overpower Goons in Tense Linda Mwananchi Rally

The political landscape in Kenya has been set ablaze following a high-stakes “Linda Mwananchi” rally in Kisumu, led by ODM Secretary General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna alongside Embakasi East MP Babu Owino. The lakeside city, traditionally an ODM stronghold, became the stage for a dramatic showdown that pitted the party’s “young blood” against the established old guard, specifically targeting Dr. Oburu Odinga.

The rally was characterized by intense friction from the onset. Reports and footage from the event indicate that the Linda Mwananchi team struggled to secure a venue, allegedly facing pressure from rival party factions that led several churches to decline hosting them. However, a breakthrough occurred when Babu Owino secured a space at the Triumph of Christ Church in Nyalinda, which served as the launching pad for the day’s fiery events.

As the convoy snaked through the Kisumu Central Business District towards Kondele, the atmosphere grew hostile. Groups of youth opposed to the rally attempted to block the advancing procession by lighting bonfires. In a raw display of political dominance, youth allied to the Linda Mwananchi faction engaged and eventually overpowered the disruptors, ensuring the rally proceeded. Analysts noted the worrying normalization of violence, with armed groups seen “escorting” leaders, yet the sheer size of the organic crowd—many of whom attended without the lure of t-shirts or money—highlighted a deep-seated defiance.

Perhaps the most shocking moment of the day was the blistering attack on Dr. Oburu Odinga’s leadership. Standing on the symbolic “war grounds” where President Ruto recently launched SGR projects, Sifuna and his team challenged the very structure of ODM’s current authority. Sifuna didn’t hold back, framing the current leadership under Oburu as having sacrificed the fight for democracy in exchange for proximity to power.

The leaders positioned themselves as the “true” heirs to the ideals of the late Raila Odinga, suggesting that the party needs the energy of figures like Sifuna and Babu Owino to re-establish itself as a national powerhouse. This direct confrontation with the Odinga “old guard” is being seen as a calculated move to reclaim the party’s grassroots support from those perceived to be warming up to the “Ruto-ODM” cooperation.

The massive turnout in Kisumu has sparked a wave of denial from government-allied politicians. Some, like Samson Cherargei, have gone as far as claiming that the viral photos showing a “sea of heads” were generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI). However, on-the-ground reports confirm an organic, charged crowd that was notably absent of both UDA “yellow” and traditional ODM “orange” branding—signifying a movement that transcends current party alliances.

Political commentators suggest that this rally should be a major warning sign for President William Ruto. With the Luo Nyanza vote appearing split and the “hate” for the current economic situation serving as a more powerful driver than political loyalty, the Linda Mwananchi movement is tapping into a vein of national frustration. As Sifuna and his team continue to “break the table” if they aren’t given a seat, the future of the ODM party—and its relationship with the Kenya Kwanza government—remains more uncertain than ever.
