Moses Kuria Signals Possible Alliance with Gachagua but Warns Against Attacks on Mt. Kenya Leaders

Political realignments in the Mt. Kenya region appear to be gaining momentum after former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria openly acknowledged Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s growing political influence and hinted at a possible partnership ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In a public statement shared on Sunday, Kuria praised Gachagua for commanding significant support across the Mt. Kenya region, even describing him as being close to becoming the region’s “undisputed kingpin.”

“To my brother Rigathi Gachagua, I am an honest man. It is an undeniable fact that the majority of our Mt Kenya people listen to you. You are ahead of the rest of us. You are edging closer to be our undisputed kingpin in the Mountain,” Kuria said.

However, the former Trade CS added a condition before any political collaboration could take place: Gachagua must stop attacking fellow regional leaders, especially women politicians.

“I might consider working with you very soon. I have only one humble request. Kindly refrain from insulting our leaders in general, our women leaders in particular and all Mt Kenya women by extension. It doesn’t really sound commensurate with your kingpin status,” Kuria added.

His remarks were seen as a response to Gachagua’s recent public criticism of several Mt. Kenya leaders, including Kirinyaga and Embu Governors Anne Waiguru and Cecily Mbarire respectively, whom the Deputy President has accused of undermining him and being used to divide the region.

Political Realignments Taking Shape

Kuria also drew a comparison to the emerging partnership between President William Ruto and Gideon Moi, suggesting that unusual political alliances are now part of Kenya’s evolving political landscape.

“Just like Gideon Moi and William Ruto are working together, I might consider working with you very soon,” he stated.

The statement highlights a potential political shift within Kenya Kwanza, as leaders from the vote-rich Mt. Kenya region begin to position themselves for 2027 political negotiations, succession politics, and regional influence.

Political analysts say Kuria’s comments mark the beginning of strategic positioning within the region ahead of the next election cycle. With over 6 million votes, the Mt. Kenya region is expected to play a decisive role in determining Kenya’s political future.

For now, Kuria’s message appears to be both an olive branch and a warning—a call for unity in the region, but also a reminder that leadership must be anchored in respect and maturity.

The coming months will reveal whether a Kuria–Gachagua political alliance is a genuine possibility—or just another move in Kenya’s ever-evolving power chessboard.
