Easy Coach Carnage: 28 Passengers Rushed to Hospital After Nakuru Highway Crash

The holiday travel season has once again been stained by tragedy, following a horrific accident involving an Easy Coach bus and a trailer on the notorious Nakuru-Mau Summit Highway. This incident, where the bus reportedly rammed the trailer, underscores the persistent danger faced by Kenyan travelers on major blackspots like Salgaa.

The immediate aftermath saw swift action from the Kenya Red Cross teams. A total of 28 passengers suffered injuries, triggering a high-stakes rescue and evacuation operation. Twelve passengers, categorized as being in critical condition, were immediately transferred to hospitals in Nakuru for specialized treatment. The remaining sixteen passengers received on-site medical attention.

Despite initial, grim speculation often associated with major highway crashes, authorities have confirmed no fatalities from this particular incident. Police worked quickly to clear the scene and safely extricate any passengers who were trapped within the wreckage.

What makes this crash particularly alarming is that it follows a separate Easy Coach incident that occurred just the day before near Matunda. That crash resulted in at least one confirmed death and numerous injuries, creating a disturbing pattern of back-to-back calamities for the popular bus company and highlighting significant operational safety concerns.

The frequency of these major accidents, particularly during the busy holiday travel period when highways are congested, casts a shadow over the country’s road safety record.

The crash location near Mau Summit is closely associated with the Salgaa stretch, a section of the highway infamous for its high incidence of severe accidents. Factors like poor visibility, steep gradients, and driver behavior—especially speeding and dangerous overtaking—contribute to making this corridor a national tragedy zone.

As families plan their travel, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the police are under immense public pressure to intensify enforcement efforts. The twin incidents serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for both infrastructural upgrades, such as the ongoing dualling of sections like Rironi-Mau Summit, and a change in driving culture to ensure a safer holiday season for everyone on Kenyan roads.
