Questions Arise Over White Probox in Cyrus Jirongo’s Fatal Crash
The investigation into the tragic death of veteran politician Cyrus Jirongo has taken a dramatic turn as detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) piece together his final moments. What was initially reported as a straightforward road accident has now become a complex probe into a mysterious midnight detour and a meeting with high-profile leaders.
On the evening of December 12, the former Cabinet Minister was spotted at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant. Witnesses and investigators confirm he spent several hours in the company of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and city real estate mogul Rebman Malala.
Around midnight, Jirongo reportedly informed his companions that he was heading to his residence in Gigiri, Nairobi. However, digital footprints and highway surveillance tell a different story. Instead of the short drive to Gigiri, his white Mercedes-Benz E350 was tracked moving in the opposite direction toward Naivasha.
CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station in Karai, Naivasha, provides a chilling look at Jirongo’s final minutes.
- 2:18:40 AM: Jirongo drives into the station from the Nairobi direction.
- The Mystery: He does not stop for fuel or refreshments.
- 2:19:19 AM: After just 39 seconds, he makes a swift U-turn to head back toward Nairobi.
- 2:19:25 AM: Only six seconds after rejoining the highway, his vehicle collided head-on with a Climax Coach bus, killing him instantly.
One of the most persistent questions in the public domain involves reports of a white Toyota Probox seen in the vicinity of Jirongo’s vehicle. Investigators are currently working to determine if the politician was being pursued, which might explain his sudden U-turn and high-speed maneuvers.
An autopsy conducted on December 17 confirmed the cause of death as severe crush injuries to the chest, abdomen, and spine, consistent with a high-impact collision.
As the family prepares to lay the former Lugari MP to rest on December 30, 2025, in Kakamega County, the search for answers continues. The DCI is currently recording statements from those present at the Karen Oasis meeting to understand Jirongo’s state of mind and why he abandoned his plan to go home in favor of a midnight trip to Naivasha.
