41-Year-Old Eliud Kipchoge Continues Legendary Career With Melbourne Win

Kenyan marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge has once again demonstrated his remarkable longevity at the highest level of distance running, winning the Melbourne Marathon Festival at the age of 41 and setting a new course record.

Kipchoge completed the race in 2 hours, 9 minutes and 10 seconds, lowering the previous Melbourne Marathon course record by two seconds during his debut appearance at the event.

The victory marks the 17th marathon win of Kipchoge’s career and his first since triumphing at the Berlin Marathon in 2023. His latest success adds another prestigious international victory to a career that has already established him as one of the greatest marathon runners of all time.

Kipchoge remained competitive throughout the race before making his decisive move during the closing stages. The two-time Olympic marathon champion pulled away from his Australian challengers before crossing the finish line at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, where he received a strong reception from spectators.

The performance was particularly notable because of Kipchoge’s age. At 41, the Kenyan remains capable of producing elite performances against younger competitors, reinforcing his reputation for exceptional discipline, endurance and consistency.

His two-second improvement over the previous course record also highlights the narrow margins that separate elite marathon performances. In a race covering more than 42 kilometres, Kipchoge needed to maintain a precise pace and execute his strategy effectively to secure the record and victory.

The Melbourne triumph is also part of a much larger ambition for the Kenyan star. The race represented the third stop on his global marathon tour, an initiative designed to take him to marathon races on every continent.

The project began in South Africa in May 2026, before continuing to South America. Australia has now become another important destination on the journey, with Kipchoge using the tour to challenge himself in different environments while bringing global attention to marathon running.

Beyond the result itself, Kipchoge’s participation has added significant international attention to the Melbourne Marathon. His presence attracted spectators and highlighted the growing profile of the event, while his course-record performance gave the race another major moment in its history.

The finish at the Melbourne Cricket Ground also provided a memorable setting for Kipchoge’s latest achievement. The iconic sporting venue offered a fitting backdrop as one of the world’s most recognised marathon athletes completed another successful chapter of his career.

Kipchoge’s return to the top of a marathon podium is also significant following his last marathon victory in Berlin in 2023. While his career has already produced Olympic gold medals and victories at some of the world’s biggest marathon events, the Melbourne win demonstrates his determination to continue competing and setting new targets.

His global marathon tour further reflects that approach. Rather than simply adding another race to an already decorated record, Kipchoge is pursuing a challenge that takes him across different continents and exposes him to new courses, conditions and audiences.

The victory is likely to further strengthen Kipchoge’s influence beyond competitive running. His career has made him an important figure in global athletics, and his continued participation at 41 provides inspiration to athletes and recreational runners alike.

For Kenya, the Melbourne performance adds another international success to the country’s rich marathon tradition. Kipchoge’s achievements have helped maintain Kenya’s prominent position in global distance running, while his latest record gives Kenyan athletics fans another reason to celebrate.

With his 17th marathon victory, a new Melbourne course record and another successful stage of his global tour, Kipchoge continues to extend a career that has already become synonymous with excellence, consistency and extraordinary longevity.
