Nairobi’s New Underground Tunnel: Shops, Cops & 21,000 Pedestrians a Day!
Forget the dark, dingy tunnels Nairobians are used to — the Green Park Terminus Pedestrian Underpass is here to change the game. Tucked at the infamous Haile Selassie – Uhuru Highway Roundabout, the mega-project promises to be Nairobi’s most secure and shopper-friendly shortcut yet.
According to Roads PS Joseph Mbugua, the tunnel won’t just be a concrete passage for pedestrians — it’s being pimped out with 24-hour police patrols AND round-the-clock retail shops. Yep, you can now grab a soda or a snack while dodging the traffic madness overhead.
Kenya National Highways Authority boss Luka Kimeli confirmed that the underpass will be armed with cameras, lights, and security checks to keep off muggers who usually stalk such spaces. “It’s the first of its kind — shops plus cops in one tunnel,” he teased.
With over 21,000 pedestrians squeezing through that roundabout daily, the city’s planners say this project will save lives by cutting down on the deadly pedestrian–vehicle run-ins.
And unlike most Nairobi projects that drag on for years, PS Mbugua insists this one is right on schedule. Once done, it could become the blueprint for similar urban makeovers across Kenya.
So next time you’re rushing through town, picture this: a sleek underground tunnel, lit up, guarded, and lined with 24/7 shops. Nairobi may just have found a way to make walking to work stylish again.
