Teachers Ditch Minet for SHA, Gaining Access to 9,016 Hospitals Overnight!
In a landmark move that promises to revolutionize healthcare access for educators, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) officially transitioned the medical cover for all Kenyan teachers and their dependents to a new framework managed by the Social Health Authority (SHA).
The historic agreement, signed on November 10, 2025, in Nairobi, shifts the management of teachers’ healthcare from Minet to the Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund (POMSF) framework. The deal was sealed with all major teacher unions, including KNUT, KUPPET, and KUSNET, ensuring broad support for the new scheme.
The most significant benefit of the new cover is the massive expansion of the healthcare provider network. Acting TSC Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Evelyn Mitei, highlighted the huge step forward.
“SHA will now give 9,016 hospitals across the country,” Dr. Mitei announced. “These include public, private, and faith-based hospitals.”
This unprecedented network coverage is expected to bring quality healthcare closer to teachers, no matter where they are posted.
Say goodbye to bureaucratic delays! The new SHA model is built on automation and digital innovation. Dr. Mitei emphasized that the process is now “fully automated—no human interface,” meaning teachers will enjoy:

- Real-Time Verification using secure biometric and One-Time-Password (OTP) systems.
“Teachers can now access healthcare without unnecessary delays,” she reaffirmed, promising speed and transparency.
The new scheme adopts a fee-for-service model, a crucial reform designed to ensure better service delivery and transparency. Dr. Mitei explained that this approach puts the teacher “at the centre of medical care” by ensuring that payments are directly linked to the actual services rendered, moving away from restrictive policy-based payouts.
