CS Aden Duale Survives Deadly Kisumu-Busia Highway Crash; 19 Rushed to Hospital

KISUMU, Kenya — A Sunday evening meant for travel turned into a scene of carnage after the motorcade of Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale was involved in a fatal road accident along the Kisumu-Busia Highway. The crash occurred at the Otonglo area as the CS was traveling from Rarieda in Siaya County. While the Cabinet Secretary emerged from the wreckage unharmed, the accident claimed the lives of three people and left nearly 20 others fighting for their lives.

According to eyewitnesses and police reports, two victims died instantly at the scene due to the impact of the collision. A third person was pronounced dead while being rushed to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH). Emergency response teams were quickly mobilized, with 19 other survivors being transported to various medical facilities across Kisumu for urgent treatment. The incident caused a massive snarl-up on the busy highway as locals gathered to assist the casualties.

Following the crash, rumors began to swirl on social media regarding the Cabinet Secretary’s condition. CS Duale moved quickly to quell the anxiety, issuing a statement confirming that he was safe and unhurt. He expressed his deep condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and commended the emergency teams for their swift action in stabilizing the injured. The CS’s security team remained at the scene to coordinate with local authorities as investigations into the cause of the crash began.

The tragedy has reignited a heated debate on X (formerly Twitter) regarding the conduct of VIP motorcades on Kenyan roads. While some users offered prayers for the survivors, many others criticized the high speeds often maintained by government convoys. “These motorcades move as if they own the road, ignoring traffic and pedestrians. My heart goes out to the families of the three who didn’t make it home today,” one user posted. Another added, “It is ironic that the Health CS is involved in a crash that highlights our broken road safety system. We need accountability for how these sirens are used.”

This latest accident underscores the persistent road safety challenges on major Kenyan highways, particularly the Kisumu-Busia stretch, which is known for its heavy traffic and high speeds. As the 19 survivors continue their recovery, the Ministry of Transport is once again under pressure to address the safety of both public road users and high-ranking officials during transit
