Baringo Residents Fear Losing Homes as New Lake Expands Rapidly

Residents of Olkokwee village in Mogotio, Baringo County, are living in fear after mysterious groundwater continued spreading across the area, creating what locals now describe as a rapidly expanding new lake. Families say the unusual water flow began suddenly from beneath the ground and has since flooded farms, homes, roads, and grazing land, raising fears of mass displacement if the situation worsens.

The phenomenon has left many residents confused and terrified, with some claiming they have never witnessed anything similar in the region before. Large sections of farmland have already been submerged, while several families have reportedly been forced to move to safer areas after water levels continued rising around their homes. Reports indicate that more than 60 families have been affected, with hundreds of acres of land already underwater.

Residents say the mysterious groundwater has disrupted normal life in the village, affecting farming activities, transport, livestock grazing, and access to schools and markets. Some locals fear the water could continue expanding and permanently alter the area’s landscape if urgent intervention is not taken. Community members are now appealing to the government, disaster response agencies, and geologists to urgently investigate the source of the underground water and provide support to affected families.

The incident has reignited concerns about environmental changes and geological instability in parts of the Rift Valley region, where communities have previously experienced rising water levels, earth movements, and unusual flooding patterns. Experts have in past years linked some of these occurrences to underground geological activity, climate change effects, and shifting water tables within the Rift Valley basin.

Local leaders and residents say the biggest concern now is the possibility of widespread displacement if the water continues spreading. Families whose homes remain surrounded by water say they are uncertain about their future and fear losing property, farmland, and livelihoods built over many years. Some residents have also expressed concern over possible health risks if stagnant water remains in the area for an extended period.

Videos and images circulating online showing water bubbling from underground and spreading across the village have sparked nationwide attention and concern. Many Kenyans on social media have called for urgent scientific assessment and humanitarian assistance to help affected families before the situation deteriorates further.

As uncertainty grows in Olkokwee, residents continue monitoring the expanding water levels with anxiety, hoping authorities will move quickly to provide answers and prevent a larger humanitarian and environmental crisis in the region.
