Matatu Operators Confirm Normal Services Ahead of June 25 Demonstrations

The Matatu Owners Association has assured Kenyans that public transport services will continue operating normally during the June 25 memorial demonstrations, while urging all stakeholders to maintain peace, respect the law, and avoid acts of violence.

Speaking in Nairobi, the association expressed solidarity with families and loved ones affected by the events of June 2024, emphasizing that justice, accountability, and respect for the rule of law remain essential for national healing and reconciliation.

The association noted that despite concerns about possible disruptions during the planned demonstrations, matatu owners, drivers, conductors, and transport workers have been encouraged to remain calm and continue offering services professionally and responsibly.

According to the association, the public transport sector remains committed to facilitating the movement of people and goods across the country while respecting the constitutional rights of citizens and prioritizing public safety.

Matatu operators also strongly condemned any form of violence, vandalism, arson, looting, or destruction of property, warning that such actions threaten the safety of passengers, transport workers, businesses, and the general public.

The association called on citizens, community leaders, civil society groups, businesses, and government agencies to uphold peace, engage in constructive dialogue, and work together towards solutions that promote justice, accountability, and national unity.

Officials reiterated that the matatu industry is primarily a service business whose responsibility is to transport passengers regardless of circumstances, noting that vehicles will remain on the roads to serve commuters as usual.

The statement comes as preparations continue for the June 25 memorial demonstrations being organized in remembrance of those who lost their lives during the anti-government protests of 2024. Organizers have maintained that the commemorative events will be peaceful and have called on authorities to guarantee security for participants.

With transport operators confirming uninterrupted services, commuters across the country are expected to continue accessing public transport normally, even as various groups prepare to mark the anniversary through demonstrations and memorial activities.

The Matatu Owners Association has urged all Kenyans to exercise restraint, avoid confrontation, and contribute to maintaining peace and stability while honoring the rights and freedoms guaranteed under the Constitution.
