NEMA Shuts Down Eight Major Nightclubs in Nairobi, Kiambu, and Kilifi
The vibrant nightlife scene in Nairobi, Kiambu, and Kilifi has just been hit with a massive, unprecedented shutdown. The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has issued immediate closure orders for eight major entertainment venues, citing persistent noise violations and a failure to comply with previous Environmental Restoration Orders (EROs). This stringent action is not a warning; it’s an immediate cease-and-desist that has silenced popular hotspots across three key regions.
The closures targeted high-profile establishments, notably hitting the trendy Kilimani area of Nairobi, the rapidly growing Ruaka hub in Kiambu County, and even a popular coastal spot in Watamu. The affected venues include Kettle House, Boba Drinks and Café, Bar Next Door, Emirates Lounge, and Kifaru Place in Nairobi; Infusion Lounge and Status Lounge in Ruaka; and Speedy’s Bar and Restaurant in Watamu. NEMA stated that these businesses had repeatedly disregarded environmental standards, despite the Authority receiving a skyrocketing number of public complaints.
This enforcement is directly governed by the Environmental Management and Coordination (Noise and Excessive Vibration Pollution) (Control) Regulations, 2009. The need for this crackdown is evident, as NEMA’s call logs show that noise complaints across the country have surged by 38 per cent over the last two years. This action follows a public compliance directive issued in September 2025, which put over 100 facilities on notice. NEMA Director-General Mamo Boru Mamo stressed that this campaign is fundamentally about “protecting public health and restoring order in urban areas.”
For the eight closed venues, the path to reopening is strict and costly. They must immediately undertake a full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and secure a new environmental license. Crucially, all operators are directed to implement comprehensive soundproofing measures to drastically reduce emissions. Only after conducting a noise survey that proves compliance with legal limits will NEMA consider allowing these major entertainment venues to resume trading. The Authority has firmly indicated that its decisive enforcement campaign will continue until environmental quality is safeguarded for the benefit of affected communities.
