Fresh Tragedy in Nanyuki as Protester Shot Dead During Ebola Demonstrations

Tensions in Laikipia County escalated yesterday after one person was shot dead during fresh demonstrations against the proposed Ebola quarantine facility near Nanyuki, bringing the total number of protest-related deaths to three.

The latest fatality occurred as hundreds of residents once again took to the streets to oppose the controversial project, which has become one of the most divisive issues in the country. Demonstrators gathered near the Laikipia Air Base carrying placards, banners, and symbolic items expressing their opposition to the planned Ebola quarantine centre.

Many protesters said they remain unconvinced by government assurances that the facility poses no danger to local communities. Some accused authorities of failing to provide adequate information about the project’s objectives and operations, while others questioned why the facility was being established in Laikipia despite widespread resistance from residents.

The demonstrations featured powerful symbolic displays, with some participants wearing protective suits and face masks while others carried a coffin bearing the word “Ebola.” One protester was also seen carrying a white cross inscribed with the words “Reject Ebola,” reflecting the fear and anxiety that continue to surround the project.

Protesters insisted that they were not participating for political reasons but were instead motivated by concerns about public health and community safety. Several residents argued that if the facility is considered unsuitable for other locations, it should not be imposed on communities in Laikipia.

What began as a peaceful demonstration, however, quickly descended into chaos after protesters reportedly blocked major roads in Nanyuki town. Police responded by deploying tear gas to disperse the crowds, triggering running battles between officers and demonstrators that lasted for several hours.

Witnesses reported scenes of confusion as protesters and police confronted each other in various parts of the town. Some demonstrators allegedly hurled stones at officers after security forces moved in to clear blocked roads, further escalating tensions.

The situation became even more controversial after some residents accused police of firing tear gas into residential areas. Several parents complained that children and other family members were affected after the gas drifted into homes located near the areas where confrontations were taking place.

NTV journalists at the scene witnessed multiple arrests during the demonstrations, with the number of people detained approaching 50 by the end of the day. Authorities have not yet released the identities of those arrested or indicated whether they will face charges related to the protests.

Despite the growing unrest and rising death toll, the government has maintained that the Ebola quarantine facility project will proceed as planned. Officials continue to argue that the centre is part of broader public health preparedness efforts and insist that it poses no threat to residents.

The government’s position has done little to calm opposition on the ground. Protest organizers and local residents have vowed to continue demonstrations until authorities provide what they describe as satisfactory explanations regarding the facility and its intended purpose.

The latest unrest highlights the widening gap between government assurances and public concerns over the project. What began as a public health debate has now evolved into a major political and security issue, drawing national attention and intensifying pressure on both local and national leaders.

With three deaths now linked to the protests and dozens of arrests recorded, pressure is mounting on the government to find a way of addressing community concerns while preventing further violence. For many residents of Nanyuki and the surrounding areas, the battle over the Ebola facility is far from over.

As tensions continue to rise, all eyes will be on the government’s next move and whether dialogue can help prevent further loss of life as opposition to the project gathers momentum.
