Meta Launches Smart Glasses With Built-In Display, Teases Future of ‘Superintelligence’

Meta is taking another swing at wearable tech with the launch of its first smart glasses featuring a built-in display. Unveiled at the company’s annual Connect event in Menlo Park, the Meta Ray-Ban Display looks to build on the success of its earlier Ray-Ban line.

Starting at $799 and shipping September 30, the glasses feature a small screen in the right lens for notifications and simple tasks. They come bundled with a wristband that reads hand gestures, letting users answer calls or reply to texts with a flick of the wrist.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg pitched the device as a gateway to “personal superintelligence,” arguing glasses are the ideal form factor to blend real-world presence with AI-powered assistance.

Alongside the flagship Display model, Meta introduced the Oakley Vanguard smart glasses aimed at athletes. Priced at $499 and launching October 21, they integrate with fitness apps like Garmin and Strava, offering real-time stats, workout summaries, and up to nine hours of battery life.

The company also refreshed its standard Ray-Ban smart glasses, now boasting nearly double the battery life and a better camera, though the price has jumped to $379.

Analysts aren’t expecting blockbuster sales yet, but see the Display glasses as a stepping stone toward Meta’s much-hyped “Orion” AR glasses, planned for 2027. Zuckerberg has called them a “time machine to the future.”
