Rashford’s Comeback: Improved Form, Newcastle Brace, and a Manager’s Challenge

Marcus Rashford reminded the footballing world of his quality with a dazzling double for Barcelona against Newcastle United in the Champions League — and he did it in front of England boss Thomas Tuchel.

The 27-year-old, on loan from Manchester United, scored his first goals for Barca since arriving in the summer, sealing a 2-1 win at St James’ Park. His first came with a precise header after 58 minutes before he doubled the lead nine minutes later with a stunning strike from the edge of the box. Anthony Gordon pulled one back late, but the Catalans held firm.

Barca coach Hansi Flick praised his new signing: “When we got the chance to sign Marcus, I said, ‘We have to do it!’ He is an outstanding finisher. These two goals will give him confidence and take him to the next level.”

Rashford, who spent last season on loan at Aston Villa, said life in Spain is transforming him: “I am learning a lot, it’s a new way of football, and I think it’s making me a better player. Playing with this young, confident team excites me. It’s refreshing.”

He also credited Flick: “He’s a top coach, a top man manager. He’ll be delighted with the three points and the confidence we showed.”

Former teammates Bruno Fernandes and Jadon Sancho praised his goals online, while pundit Joe Cole hailed him as “unstoppable when at his best.”

For Newcastle, Eddie Howe admitted frustration after missed chances: “We had effort and commitment but lacked a clinical edge. The game swung on their first goal.”

Rashford’s resurgence in Spain suggests Barcelona fans — and perhaps England — may yet see the best of him.
