Another Death in Police Custody Sparks Outrage in Migori
Fresh concerns over police conduct have emerged after a 40-year-old man, Alan Kamau Kimani, died while in custody at Komomwamu Police Post in Kuria West, Migori County.
Kimani was arrested on Thursday, September 25, for allegedly cutting down trees. According to his mother, Mary Wambui, she was notified of his arrest through a call from a police officer. When she visited the station, she claims officers demanded KSh 15,000 to secure her son’s release—money she did not have.
On Friday, September 26, Wambui says she received another call from the same officer, this time issuing threats and insisting she bring the money. Hours later, she was informed that her son had died in custody.
Police officers at Komomwamu post allegedly told her that Kimani had committed suicide while in detention, but the family strongly disputes this account.
The sudden death has caused tension in the area, with residents and human rights advocates raising alarm over rising cases of alleged extortion and abuse in police cells.
The family is now demanding the arrest of the officers involved and calling for a thorough investigation to uncover the truth behind Kimani’s death.
The incident adds to a growing list of deaths in police custody across the country, further fueling public debate on police accountability, corruption, and the urgent need for reforms within the service.
