Nairobi Electronics Dealer Suffers Multi-Million Shilling Loss in Sophisticated Diamond Plaza Heist

A high-end electronics retailer based at Diamond Plaza in Parklands, Nairobi, is counting heavy losses after a daring burglary that saw thieves make away with smartphones and cash worth nearly Ksh 10 million.

According to the shop owner, the break-in appeared highly coordinated, with the perpetrators drilling a hole through the wall at the rear of the premises to gain discreet access. Once inside, the suspects allegedly stole 32 units of the newly released iPhone 16 Pro Max, valued at approximately Ksh 3.8 million, before breaking into the shop’s safe and carting away an additional Ksh 5.8 million in cash.

The shop owner, who has since shared CCTV footage of the suspect, appealed for public assistance in identifying the individual captured on camera.

“The police are following up on the matter, but we would appreciate any help in identifying the thief caught on camera,” the retailer said in an appeal circulated online.

The incident has rattled traders at Diamond Plaza, a busy commercial hub known for electronics and lifestyle businesses, with many raising concerns over the growing sophistication of criminal activity targeting high-value inventory.

Industry analysts note that the heist underscores both the opportunities and risks facing Kenya’s fast-expanding consumer electronics market, where premium smartphones such as Apple’s iPhone remain in high demand but also attract organized criminal syndicates.

The stolen devices, if resold through the black market, could significantly undercut authorized dealers and complicate supply chain dynamics. Stakeholders argue that stronger retail security investments, digital tracking mechanisms, and closer coordination with law enforcement are becoming essential for retailers handling luxury goods.

Police investigations into the matter are ongoing, with authorities urging traders to step up surveillance and tighten internal security to curb similar incidents.
