Gachagua Vows to Oust Ruto, Aligns with Opposition and ‘Gen Z’
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has dramatically re-entered the national political stage, announcing his formal alignment with the Opposition in a bold declaration to mobilize the youth vote and remove President William Ruto from power in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking at the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) Youth League forum in Nairobi on November 5, 2025, Gachagua officially positioned himself as a champion for Gen Z and Millennials, pledging to unite the youth demographic that has recently become a potent force for political change in Kenya.
Gachagua, who was impeached in October 2024 on charges including corruption, abuse of office, and insubordination—allegations he vehemently denies—has directly challenged his former running mate, President Ruto.
His new political pivot is strategically centered on capitalizing on the widespread youth discontent fueled by high unemployment and economic challenges.
“My mission is very simple, to help you, the young people, get rid of Kasongo (referring to President Ruto) and take your rightful place in the governance of this country,” Gachagua stated, directly appealing to the youthful majority.
A key element of Gachagua’s new political narrative is his defiance of the Ruto administration during the massive 2024 Gen Z protests against tax hikes and governance issues. By highlighting his support for the protestors, he seeks to cement his image as a credible, anti-establishment alternative.
Through his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), Gachagua is actively pushing for a single, unified opposition candidate to face President Ruto. This move solidifies his role within the broader ‘United Opposition,’ which also includes figures like Kalonzo Musyoka and Martha Karua.
Key Pledges to the Youth
- Political Inclusion: He pledged to implement party reforms to fully include young digital activists in leadership and decision-making structures within the DCP.
- Voter Mobilization: He urged the youth to register as voters in large numbers, stating, “This country will be delivered on the ballot box.”
- Future Government Role: Gachagua promised that if elected President, he would fully involve young people in his government and appoint them to key leadership positions.
The former Deputy President’s declaration signals a major shake-up in the political landscape, setting the stage for a dramatic two-year countdown to the 2027 polls, where the power of the youth vote will be a decisive factor.
