Senator Cherargei Threatens Uhuru Kenyatta’s Retirement Perks Over Political Activity

The political tensions between the current administration of President William Ruto and his predecessor, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, escalated sharply over the weekend. Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei used a public forum in Nandi County on Sunday to issue a direct and fiery warning to Kenyatta: cease all political activities or risk losing his constitutionally guaranteed retirement benefits and security detail.

Cherargei’s remarks explicitly tied Kenyatta’s taxpayer-funded perks to his support for the current government, declaring: “If you don’t support Ruto’s government, we are going to remove all your retirement benefits including security.” He publicly urged the former president to “stay at home and watch how this country is being transformed,” rather than undermining the administration.

This is not the first time such threats have been levied against the former head of state. Similar warnings surfaced in September 2025, indicating a sustained campaign by allies of President Ruto to sideline Kenyatta from active politics following his 2022 handover of power. The ongoing animosity stems largely from Kenyatta’s perceived political alignment against Ruto’s agenda.

While the political rhetoric is intense, legal experts have weighed in to clarify the actual mechanism for such a punitive action. The Presidential Retirement Benefits Act does allow Parliament to reduce a former president’s entitlements if they engage in specific types of prohibited political involvement.

However, experts confirm that no formal action has been initiated against Kenyatta to date. Crucially, any attempt to strip him of his benefits would face significant constitutional challenges, as these entitlements are largely secured by law to protect the dignity and security of a former head of state. Despite the Senator’s strong warning, the actual removal of Kenyatta’s security and pension remains a complex legal and political hurdle.
