Gachagua Challenges Ruto’s UDA with ‘Voter Fraud’ Gambit in Mbeere North

The gloves are officially off in the high-stakes battle for the soul of the Mt. Kenya region. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, now leading the Democratic Congress Party (DCP), has launched a direct political assault on President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) just days before the critical November 27 by-election in Mbeere North, Embu County.

Gachagua’s calculated strike targets UDA candidate Leo Wa Muthende, publicly accusing him of not being a registered voter in the constituency, an absolute prerequisite for candidacy.

The Legal Loophole and The IEBC’s Verdict

The accusation, however dramatic, appears to be technically nullified by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) records.

Investigations show that while the candidate’s current political moniker is Leo Wa Muthende, his registration remains under his original legal name, Leonard Njeru. The IEBC has confirmed the validity of his registration, stating that a duly executed deed poll legally links the two names, satisfying the requirements for nomination and proving his eligibility.

More Than a Name: A Proxy War

This is not a simple case of administrative oversight; it is a clear political manoeuvre exposing the deepening chasm between the former political allies. The dispute over a voter’s name is merely the opening salvo in a fierce proxy war for regional hegemony.

  • UDA’s Stance: For President Ruto’s party, a win in Mbeere North is crucial for asserting continued dominance in the Mt. Kenya bedrock and sidelining Gachagua’s burgeoning influence.
  • Gachagua’s Strategy: The former DP’s decision to weaponize the candidate’s name change, despite its legal ratification, is a calculated attempt to sow seeds of distrust and confusion among the electorate. It frames the UDA candidate as an outsider or, at best, a figure of dubious legal standing, giving the DCP an emotional and narrative edge.

The Threat of Voter Confusion

The political drama now risks escalating into a legal challenge. Gachagua’s camp will likely argue that the discrepancy between the name used in campaigning (Leo Wa Muthende) and the one on the official voter roll (Leonard Njeru) will lead to voter confusion and potentially invalidate the election results.

Regardless of the Mbeere North outcome, this incident confirms that the political divorce between Ruto and Gachagua is not only final but is now moving into a combative phase, using local by-elections to test their respective strengths ahead of a potential national realignment. The by-election is now less about Mbeere North, and more about who truly controls the vote-rich mountain.
