South C Building Collapse: Nairobi’s Construction Safety Under the Spotlight Again

Panic gripped residents of the South C Shopping Centre area early this morning after a building under construction suddenly collapsed, sending plumes of thick dust and debris into the air. The Kenya Red Cross confirmed the incident at dawn, initiating a massive multi-agency rescue operation to locate survivors trapped beneath the rubble.

The National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU), Nairobi City County officials, and the National Police Service have cordoned off the site. While an injured man was rescued shortly after the collapse by brave bystanders and fellow security guards, a major search is currently underway for the guards who were on duty at the time of the incident.

Witness accounts describe a scene of sudden devastation. A local security guard reported hearing a “loud bang” followed by a suffocating cloud of dust, prompting nearby business owners and residents to flee their premises in fear.

“The area has been cordoned off as search and rescue operations continue,” stated the Kenya Red Cross via a post on X. Nairobi Police Commander George Seda confirmed that specialized teams are scouring the site, which sits adjacent to several other ongoing construction projects, raising concerns about the structural integrity of neighboring buildings.

This latest tragedy in South C adds to a disturbing trend of structural failures within Nairobi County. The incident echoes previous disasters that have plagued the city’s construction sector:

  • July 2025: A wall collapse on Rhapta Road left several workers injured.
  • February 2025: A three-storey building in Parklands collapsed, resulting in one fatality.

As the multi-agency team continues to shift through the debris in South C, the focus once again turns to the National Construction Authority (NCA) and county regulators. Residents are demanding stricter oversight to prevent what many describe as “preventable disasters” in the city’s rapidly expanding skyline.
