The Dark Lustre of Abimbo: Why Widows in Siaya are Paying for Gold with Sex

In the dusty, sun-scorched hills of Abimbo, Siaya County, the promise of gold is a cruel mirage for hundreds of vulnerable women. While the mines are touted as a source of wealth for the region, a harrowing investigation by Africa Uncensored has pulled back the curtain on a “hidden economy” where the currency isn’t just Kenyan Shillings—it’s human dignity. For the widows of Siaya, the search for gold has devolved into a desperate struggle against systemic sexual exploitation.

The power dynamic at the Abimbo mines is stark and predatory. Young, able-bodied men control every aspect of the extraction process—from the deep pits to the crushing of the ore. Widows, often left with no inheritance or land due to restrictive cultural practices, flock to these sites to “scavenge” for leftover rocks. However, access to these gold-bearing stones is frequently “taxed” by the men in charge. In this lawless environment, “sex-for-stones” has become a normalized, albeit silent, transaction for survival.

The silence surrounding this abuse is reinforced by a double-edged sword: extreme poverty and cultural stigma. Many of these women fear that speaking out will lead to them being banned from the mines, their only source of daily bread. Above ground, the community often turns a blind eye, viewing the widows’ plight through a lens of judgment rather than protection. This culture of silence ensures that the “gold-for-sex” trade remains one of the most underreported human rights crises in Nyanza.

Local activists are now calling on the Ministry of Mining and the Siaya County Government to formalize the artisanal mining sector. Without official tracking and the presence of security, these mines remain “dark zones” where labor laws and basic human rights do not exist. As the price of gold hits record highs, the human cost in Abimbo continues to rise—stealing the futures of women who are simply trying to feed their children.
