But as the US targets a 2028 pre-commercial 6G rollout and Asian markets like Japan and South Korea aim for 2030, the physical limitations of ground-based infrastructure are becoming apparent. Unlike the standard Starlink service that requires a satellite dish, the new “Direct-to-Cell” technology allows standard 4G and 5G LTE smartphones to connect directly to Starlink’s constellation of Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. This means that in remote counties where building a physical tower is financially impossible, your phone will simply treat a satellite as a “tower in the sky.” The Communications Authority of Kenya has already begun technical evaluations to ensure these space signals don’t interfere with existing networks.
While satellite technology fills the gaps today, 6G is being designed as an “AI-native” network that integrates terrestrial and satellite systems into one seamless fabric.
