Student Unrest Crisis Deepens as Alliance High Fire Suspects Arrested

The investigation into a fire incident at Alliance High School has intensified after police arrested 10 students suspected of being involved in the incident that destroyed part of the school’s mattress storage facility.

The arrests come as authorities continue to piece together what happened at one of Kenya’s most prestigious national schools. According to school officials, the fire broke out in the early hours of the morning and affected a section of an older dormitory facility used for storing mattresses. Fortunately, the blaze was quickly contained before it could spread to other parts of the school, and no injuries or fatalities were reported.

Board of Management Chairman Sam Ncheeri confirmed that 10 students had been taken into custody to assist investigators as police seek to establish the circumstances surrounding the fire. Detectives are reportedly treating the incident as a suspected case of arson, although investigations are still ongoing and authorities have not yet announced formal charges against the suspects.

Following the incident, Alliance High School temporarily closed and parents were asked to collect their children. School administrators said the decision was made as a precautionary measure to allow internal assessments, reinforce safety measures, and create a conducive environment before learning resumes. The school’s management assured parents that all students were accounted for and remained safe throughout the incident.

The fire comes at a time when Kenya’s education sector is grappling with a worrying surge in school unrest. In recent days, several institutions including Lenana School, Nakuru Girls, and other learning institutions have experienced disturbances, fires, or temporary closures. The situation has sparked national concern among parents, education stakeholders, and government officials.

The Alliance High incident has drawn even greater attention because it follows closely behind the tragic Utumishi Girls Senior School fire in Gilgil that claimed 16 lives and left dozens injured. The Utumishi tragedy prompted calls for stricter safety standards, improved student counseling services, and tougher action against those responsible for arson attacks in schools.

Education experts have warned that the recent wave of unrest points to deeper challenges within schools, including student welfare concerns, discipline issues, mental health pressures, and the need for stronger engagement between learners and school administrations. The government has already begun reviewing safety measures in boarding schools as concern continues to grow over the rising number of incidents.

For now, investigators are focusing on establishing the motive behind the Alliance High fire and determining whether additional suspects may have been involved. The outcome of the investigation is expected to shape further action by both law enforcement agencies and education authorities.

As parents await answers and students remain away from school, the incident has once again highlighted the urgent need to address the growing unrest being witnessed in learning institutions across the country.
