Zahir Jhanda Summoned as Probe Intensifies Into Deadly Linda Mwananchi Convoy Attack
Police have summoned Nyaribari Chache MP Zahir Jhanda to record a statement with detectives in Kisii as investigations intensify into the deadly attack on the Linda Mwananchi convoy in Keumbu, Kisii County, that left one person dead and several others injured.
The Friday incident, which began as a political procession, descended into chaos after a group of youths allegedly pelted the convoy with stones, forcing supporters and leaders to flee for safety. The violence claimed the life of Vincent Osemo, popularly known as Mapinduzi, who reportedly fell from a moving vehicle before being fatally attacked. Several other people sustained injuries, while a number of vehicles belonging to opposition leaders were extensively damaged.
The attack also targeted the vehicle carrying former Chief Justice David Maraga, prompting widespread condemnation from opposition leaders, who described the incident as a dangerous escalation of political violence. They questioned why a peaceful political convoy was violently disrupted and called for those responsible to face the full force of the law.
As investigations gathered pace, police arrested seven suspects believed to have participated in the attack. Detectives have also directed MP Zahir Jhanda to appear before the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) offices in Kisii to assist with the ongoing investigations. Authorities have not disclosed the specific reasons for summoning the legislator but say the probe is ongoing and that all relevant individuals will be questioned.
However, members of the Linda Mwananchi movement have criticized the pace of the investigations, arguing that several individuals captured in videos throwing stones have yet to be arrested. They further alleged that some of the attackers were seen operating near police officers during the violence, raising concerns about the security response and demanding a transparent investigation.
Meanwhile, mourning continues in Gioneri Village, the home of the late Vincent Osemo. Family members and residents have appealed to the government to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation to ensure justice is served. They described Osemo as a hardworking, dedicated, and promising young leader whose death has left behind a grieving family, including children who depended on him.
The Keumbu violence has renewed concerns over rising political intolerance and election-related violence ahead of the 2027 General Election. Political leaders and civil society groups are calling for greater restraint, enhanced security during political events, and swift prosecution of those responsible for acts of violence.
