Kamukunji Grounds Transformed from Symbol of Resistance to Community Hub as Kenya Marks Saba Saba

As Kenya commemorated Saba Saba Day, the historic Kamukunji Grounds in Nairobi stood as a powerful reminder of the country’s long journey toward democracy. Once known as the epicenter of pro-democracy protests, political activism, and violent confrontations between protesters and security forces, the iconic grounds are now being transformed into a modern community and recreational facility.

A modern basketball court has been constructed, alongside a seven-a-side football facility and a community centre designed to provide residents with spaces for learning, recreation, and social activities.

Construction of the project began in September last year, with government officials regularly inspecting its progress. During one of the site visits, officials highlighted the facilities being developed for the benefit of the surrounding community.

“We have football pitches built to standard as per FKF requirements. On the other side, we have a basketball court, a seven-a-side pitch, and a community centre with many rooms that will serve the community.”

Residents say the project has already begun changing the face of the neighbourhood by creating safe recreational spaces for young people while providing a modern community facility for various social programmes.

For families who witnessed the violence that once defined Kamukunji, the transformation carries deep emotional significance. While the painful memories remain, many believe the redevelopment offers a sense of healing and hope for future generations.

Even as Kamukunji embraces a new identity as a centre for sports, recreation, and community development, its historical significance remains deeply embedded in Kenya’s democratic journey. Every Saba Saba commemoration serves as a reminder that the freedoms enjoyed today were secured through decades of political struggle and sacrifice.
