Six Killed, 41 Injured in Devastating Tahmeed Bus Crash at Kapiti Plains Along Nairobi-Mombasa Highway

Six people have been confirmed dead and 41 others injured following a horrific road accident involving a Tahmeed Coach passenger bus and two trailers at Kapiti Plains, Konza, along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway in the early hours of the morning.

The deadly collision, which occurred at one of the country’s busiest transport corridors, left the three vehicles extensively damaged and triggered a massive rescue operation involving police officers, emergency responders, and Good Samaritans.

According to preliminary investigations, one of the trailers was traveling from Mombasa towards Nairobi when its driver allegedly attempted to overtake another trailer. The risky maneuver resulted in a catastrophic chain of events after the overtaking trailer collided with the second truck, causing it to veer into the opposite lane where it crashed head-on with an oncoming Tahmeed bus carrying passengers.

The force of the impact completely mangled the front section of the bus and left debris scattered across the highway, trapping several passengers inside the wreckage.

Kalama Sub-County Police Commander Patrick Gaitirira confirmed that six people died at the scene, while dozens of others sustained injuries of varying severity.

“It was so serious that on the spot we had six people who died and others, a number of them, sustained serious and minor injuries and were rushed to Machakos Level Five Hospital. All road users are urged to take caution, and especially when you are overtaking, be very careful.”

Police said the driver of the trailer that allegedly attempted the overtaking maneuver and the driver of the Tahmeed bus were among those who died instantly. Four other victims also succumbed to injuries at the scene, bringing the death toll to six.

Following the crash, emergency teams worked for hours to rescue passengers trapped inside the wreckage before transporting the injured to Machakos Level Five Hospital, where medical personnel immediately began treatment.

Hospital officials confirmed that 41 survivors were admitted following the accident. Of these, 36 sustained minor injuries and are reported to be in stable condition, while five patients remain in critical condition after suffering serious injuries, including spinal injuries, dislocated limbs, fractures, and severe head and facial trauma. Medical teams continue to monitor the critically injured patients as they receive specialized care.

The bodies of the deceased were retrieved from the mangled vehicles and transferred to the Machakos Level Five Hospital Mortuary pending identification and postmortem examinations.

The tragic accident caused significant disruption along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway as police temporarily cordoned off the area to facilitate rescue efforts, remove the wreckage, and allow investigators to document the scene before traffic flow resumed.

Authorities have since launched investigations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the crash, although preliminary findings point to dangerous overtaking by one of the trailers as the likely cause.

The latest tragedy has once again renewed concerns over road safety on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, a route that has witnessed numerous fatal crashes involving heavy commercial vehicles. Road safety experts continue to urge motorists, particularly drivers of trucks and long-distance buses, to exercise patience, observe traffic regulations, and avoid reckless overtaking that puts the lives of other road users at risk.

Police have appealed to all motorists to remain vigilant, especially when overtaking on highways, emphasizing that a single miscalculation can have devastating consequences for dozens of innocent road users.
