E-Bus Backbone Solidified: BasiGo Unleashes 160kW Fast Charging Network Across Nairobi

BasiGo, the frontrunner in Sub-Saharan Africa’s electric bus sector, has dramatically scaled up its operational capabilities by launching three strategic new charging depots in Nairobi. This infrastructure leap is designed to secure the long-term reliability and performance of its rapidly expanding electric fleet across the city.

The new facilities, strategically located in Komarock, Taj Mall, and Riruta, substantially increase the company’s capacity, reinforcing its status as the operator of East and Sub-Saharan Africa’s largest fleet of electric Public Service Vehicles (PSVs).

The core of this expansion is the advanced charging technology deployed:

  • Capacity: The new depots feature DC fast chargers capable of servicing up to 100 buses daily through efficient sequential charging.
  • Speed & Standards: Charging speeds reach up to 160kW, utilizing both GB/T and CCS2 connectors for broad compatibility.
  • Power Source: The system is intelligently designed to leverage Kenya Power’s e-mobility tariff and tap into excess nighttime grid capacity, ensuring sustainable and cost-effective power supply.

Moses Nderitu, Managing Director for Kenya at BasiGo, affirmed the strategic importance, noting, “This expansion gives bus operators the confidence to go electric. They can see that the essential backbone, from rapid charging to local service, is now in place…”

At the Taj Mall depot, BasiGo has established a critical integrated service and customer excellence centre. This facility represents a key investment in specialized technical support:

  • It will provide bespoke maintenance services specifically for CATL battery technology.
  • The center offers direct, accessible customer service, ensuring technical expertise is on the ground.

This focus on localized technical support is intended to guarantee maximum uptime, performance, and safety for every electric bus in the fleet, mitigating the common concerns associated with EV maintenance in new markets.

The move received strong backing from Kenya Power. Managing Director and CEO, Dr. (Eng.) Joseph Siror, highlighted the synergy between the two entities. “Kenya Power is proud to power the future of mobility in Kenya… This expansion is a great example of what’s possible when innovators like BasiGo partner with us—we are driving progress toward a cleaner and more sustainable Kenya.”

With this infrastructure upgrade, BasiGo is solidifying the operational framework needed to accelerate the adoption of electric mobility, positioning Kenya as a regional leader in sustainable public transport.
