Kikopey Carnage: Children Among 16 Killed in Matatu-Trailer Collision
A deadly road accident on Sunday afternoon near Kikopey, Gilgil, along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway has claimed the lives of 16 people.
Thirteen passengers were reported dead on the spot after a 14-seater matatu collided head-on with a truck. Three others, who were rushed to hospital in critical condition, later succumbed to their injuries. Among those who died on Monday were two children.
Nakuru County Police Commander Emmanuel Opuru confirmed the crash, stating the matatu was overtaking before ramming into the oncoming trailer.
“The matatu was overtaking and then it rammed into the trailer causing 13 fatalities and three others seriously injured,” Opuru said.
Reports indicate that the victims had hired the vehicle in Nairobi and were headed to Nakuru for a family function.
A police probe has been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, as authorities continue to urge drivers to exercise caution on the busy highway.
