On Sunday, September 28, a sleepy village in Othaya, Nyeri, was shaken to life as thousands of Kenyans trooped in to stand with 17-year-old TikTok sensation Vincent Kaluma, popularly known as Kaluma Boy.
Unlike flashy influencers flaunting cars and trips, Kaluma captured hearts by documenting his father’s painful battle with a stroke. From hospital days to the endless hours of home care, Kaluma shared raw, heartbreaking videos of his father’s suffering — and his own backbreaking hustle on tea farms to pay the bills. His honesty drew thousands of followers… and now, an entire nation’s support.
The Sunday scenes were nothing short of historic. Crowds poured in — on buses, bikes, and personal cars — choking Othaya’s roads as if for a political rally. But this wasn’t politics. It was solidarity.
They came bearing food, medicine, cash, and love. Bishop Muthee Kiengei’s church even donated a special hospital bed. Moved to tears, Kaluma’s mother thanked Kenyans, saying: “Nimeona Mungu amejileta kwangu… Mungu awabariki sana.”
But the youth were quick to guard the moment. One politician who tried to hijack the spotlight was chased off, told to “give your donation and leave.” This was Kaluma’s day — no politics allowed.
The show of love sent shockwaves online. Former CJ David Maraga praised Gen Z for proving Kenya’s future rests in their hands.
