Safaricom’s M-PESA Super App Takes on the NSE with ‘Ziidi Trader’
Safaricom is executing the next logical step in its strategy to evolve M-PESA from the undisputed king of mobile money into a full-stack financial ecosystem. The new feature, ‘Ziidi Trader,’ is currently being piloted to allow millions of M-PESA users to buy and sell stocks directly from their mobile phones.
This move is a foundational element of Safaricom’s aggressive push into the investment space under its new “Ziidi” brand, which has been actively developed since late 2024. By integrating the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) directly into the M-PESA super app, Safaricom aims to solidify its dominance beyond just payments and lending.
Technology to Demolish Market Barriers
‘Ziidi Trader’ is designed to be a modern mobile trading platform, complete with essential features such as watchlists, price alerts, and portfolio tracking. The technology’s main strategic goal is to dramatically lower the barriers that have historically crippled participation in Kenya’s capital markets.
Currently, the NSE suffers from a stark inactivity problem:
- Only 61,000 out of 1.4 million registered investors actively trade.
- The participation rate is a meager 4.3%.
This low engagement has been fueled by several systemic issues, including: high trading costs, cumbersome account opening processes, and the requirement to transact only through licensed brokers. M-PESA’s integrated approach is engineered to bypass these pain points, simplifying access for the vast majority of Kenyans who already transact daily on their phones.
The success of ‘Ziidi Trader’ could usher in a new era of retail investing, onboarding a generation of users who view the stock market as just another accessible service within their ubiquitous M-PESA super app. Safaricom’s strategy is clear: demolish traditional financial gatekeepers using the power of its entrenched mobile platform.
