Wavinya Ndeti Gets ‘Influential’ Award While Suppliers Go Unpaid—Including KSh 19M to a Comedian!
Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti Oduwole is basking in the glow of international recognition, having been honored at the 4th African Women Awards in Kigali, Rwanda, for her contributions to women’s leadership since 2022.
However, the shiny trophy has been met not with applause, but with a torrent of white-hot rage from constituents and critics back in Machakos, who are demanding answers for the county’s crippling KSh 2.38 billion pending bills backlog.
The timing of the award is disastrous, directly coinciding with a massive public outcry that services are grinding to a halt and that local suppliers—including popular comedian Sammy Kioko, who is allegedly owed KSh 19 million—are being bled dry

The Fury Erupts on X
The most potent reaction came from social media, where critics wasted no time in questioning the validity of the African Women Award itself. The sentiment boiled down to a single, damning question: How can a leader be honored for influence while presiding over a massive fiscal failure?
One critic put it bluntly: “Welcome to Africa where someone who refuses to pay debt is awarded an influential award.”
Another user pointed to the disastrous state of essential services: “Pay debts the county owes to suppliers, which Machakos are you fixing? When was the last time you visited Athiriver, Mavoko sub county? Nothing is working garbage, broken sewer line, no water, roads are pathetic. The only thing working in Ngelani bar which is run by your relatives.”

The Political Tightrope
While Ndeti’s supporters rush to defend her, highlighting alleged anti-corruption efforts and early infrastructure initiatives, these claims are being drowned out by the noise of non-payment and service collapse.
This situation presents a classic political dilemma: Is a leader’s contribution measured by their intentions and symbolic leadership, or by the tangible delivery of basic services and fiscal responsibility to their constituents?
For the people of Machakos, the answer is clear: The problems of garbage, broken sewers, and unpaid suppliers outweigh any plaque received in Kigali. Governor Ndeti’s true leadership test is not on an international stage, but in clearing that multi-billion shilling debt.
