Former Governor Mike Sonko Declares War on GBV, Offers Sh300K Bounty in Meru Rape Case (WATCH)

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has launched a forceful public campaign against gender-based violence (GBV), following a deeply disturbing incident in Meru where a woman was reportedly raped by a bodaboda gang.

In a strongly worded statement released online and accompanied by a video, Sonko announced a Sh300,000 reward for any information that leads to the immediate arrest of the suspects. He vowed that the perpetrators would not “hide or breathe another day freely.”

“What happened to this woman is pure evil,” Sonko said. “A gang of cowards violated her and tried to silence her with threats. I will not allow these beasts to hide or breathe another day freely.”

The former governor stated that his private rescue and security team has already been deployed to Meru to locate the survivor. Their mission is to arrange her urgent evacuation to Nairobi for critical medical care, protection, and psychological support.

Sonko emphasized that the pursuit of the suspects would be relentless: “Let it be known: we are coming for them. They will face justice, and there will be no peace, no escape, and no mercy under the law. Violence against women MUST END NOW.”

He tagged the DCI Kenya and FIDA Kenya in his online post, urging both investigative agencies and women’s rights groups to join the effort to secure justice for the survivor.

Sonko’s heightened involvement in the fight against GBV is rooted in a personal family tragedy. He has previously disclosed that his own daughter survived a serious case of domestic abuse.

This painful experience pushed him into more visible activism. After facilitating his daughter’s treatment at Nairobi Women’s Hospital, he expanded his support initiatives to include financial aid, medical care, and legal assistance for other survivors.

The recent Meru case, Sonko noted, has only strengthened his resolve, confirming he intends to follow the matter “to the end.”
