Samsung Unveils the 10-Inch TriFold, Pushing Foldable Limits
Samsung Electronics has officially launched its first multi-folding smartphone, the Galaxy Z TriFold, in a bold move to solidify its position in the premium foldable phone market. This high-profile debut is aimed directly at intensifying competition from Chinese rivals like Huawei and preempting Apple’s expected entry into the segment next year.
The launch reinforces Samsung’s footing in a niche market where analysts predict volume growth despite production challenges and high prices.
The Galaxy Z TriFold is a technological showcase that pushes the boundaries of flexible display design:
- Display Size: When unfolded, the device presents a massive 10-inch (253.1mm) display. This size is achieved using three panels and is nearly 25% larger than Samsung’s current flagship foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 model.
- Pricing: The model has launched with a price tag of about 3.59 million won ($2,440.17 USD).
- Power & Charging: It features Samsung’s largest battery in its flagship models and supports super-fast charging, achieving 50% power in 30 minutes.
Alex Lim, Samsung Electronics Executive Vice President, noted that the TriFold’s launch is intended for niche customers who want its unique features, not as a mass-market volume driver.
The device’s initial launch schedule is phased:
- It will go on sale domestically in South Korea on December 12.
- It will be rolled out to China, Singapore, Taiwan, and the United Arab Emirates later this year.
- The U.S. launch is expected as early as the first quarter of next year.
Analysts, including Ryu Young-ho of NH Investment & Securities, emphasized that this is a “first-generation product” and its launch will serve as a test case. He noted that while Samsung’s established Galaxy Z Fold line has matured over seven generations, the new tri-fold design “could still face issues around completeness or durability.”
The overall foldable smartphone market, despite this high-profile launch, is expected to remain small, accounting for less than 3% of the total smartphone market by 2027. However, the market is forecast for robust annual growth in the 30% range by 2026 and 2027 as competition heats up with major players officially launching their devices.
The launch of the Galaxy Z TriFold is significant for Kenyan tech enthusiasts, even if the device itself won’t be widely available locally anytime soon:
- High-Bar Innovation: The TriFold’s launch raises the bar for premium innovation. This advanced R&D typically benefits mainstream products later, potentially making future iterations of the more common Galaxy Z Fold and Flip devices more robust and feature-rich for the Kenyan market.
- Delayed Availability: Due to its price and niche positioning, the TriFold’s official launch in Kenya will likely be delayed, arriving well after the initial target markets.
- Price Anchor: The high initial launch price of the TriFold reinforces the premium status of all foldable technology. Consumers in Kenya looking for a foldable will likely continue to focus on the existing Galaxy Z series and wait for competitive pricing strategies from retailers.
