Shock Survey Crowns Kabogo as New Mt. Kenya Kingpin, Eclipsing Gachagua
The political landscape in the vote-rich Mt. Kenya region has just been violently shaken by a new, albeit unverified, survey that claims to have identified the region’s preferred political heavyweight. According to the African Institute for Policy and Governance Research, the mantle of the region’s spokesperson is overwhelmingly favored to fall upon current ICT Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo, who allegedly commands a massive 50% support.
This puts Kabogo significantly ahead of the once-dominant figures in the region: former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua trails at 38%, former President Uhuru Kenyatta sits at 8%, and CS Kithure Kindiki registers just 4%.
The timing of this survey is highly provocative. It emerges amid an intense political vacuum and succession scramble in Mt. Kenya, particularly following Gachagua’s impeachment in 2024. The region has been actively pushing for stronger, unified influence within President Ruto’s administration, and Gachagua’s ouster has created a leadership void that several political heavyweights are aggressively trying to fill.
The survey credits Kabogo’s ascent to his long political track record, citing his past roles as Juja MP, two-term Kiambu Governor (2013-2022), and his current high-profile cabinet position focusing on digital initiatives. For a region keen on development, the CS docket offers a powerful platform to deliver tangible benefits and connect with the youth.
Despite the striking numbers—which claim to be backed by over 106,000 respondents from Mt. Kenya counties and the diaspora—the survey comes with a critical disclaimer: no independent verification exists for either the poll results or the “African Institute for Policy and Governance Research” group behind it.
In Kenya’s often-turbulent political environment, polls lacking independent audit are frequently viewed as tactical maneuvers intended to shape public perception and build momentum for a specific political faction. This report could easily be interpreted as a strategic push to solidify Kabogo’s position as the most formidable and loyal figure in the region, thereby boosting his stock within the Ruto administration and further marginalizing the influence of the impeached Gachagua.
Regardless of its authenticity, this survey dramatically intensifies the Mt. Kenya succession politics, officially placing the veteran politician William Kabogo at the very centre of the ongoing power struggle for the Mountain’s soul.
