The “Gusii Super-Alliance”: Matiang’i, Gachagua, and Kalonzo Storm Kisii

The political landscape of the “Gusii Highlands” was fundamentally reshaped on Monday, February 23, 2026, as the United Opposition brigade descended on Kisii and Nyamira counties. In a move loaded with symbolism, former Interior CS Dr. Fred Matiang’i was officially coronated by elders as the Abagusii Community Spokesperson. Flanked by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Matiang’i’s “homecoming” tour signaled his formal entry into the 2027 presidential equation, with thousands of supporters in red and green overflowing the Ekerenyo and Keumbu grounds.

While the rallies were massive, they were far from peaceful. The high-voltage tour was marred by ugly scenes of violence that broke out in Keroka, on the border of Kisii and Nyamira. A vehicle was torched by angry mobs, and tear gas filled the air as rival youth groups clashed during the procession. Opposition leaders were quick to blame “state-sponsored disruptors” for the chaos, particularly following reports of an attack on the offices of Kisii Governor Simba Arati. Despite the smoke and stones, the “United” leaders refused to abandon their open-top vehicles, vowing that “no amount of intimidation” would stop their three-day march through the region.

Standing shoulder-to-shoulder, the unlikely trio of Gachagua, Kalonzo, and Matiang’i sent a clear message to State House: the mission is now a “One Term” presidency for the current administration. Rigathi Gachagua, leaning into his “Wantam” slogan, urged the people of Gusii to join the Mt. Kenya region in what he called a “liberation movement” against economic mismanagement and the high cost of living. The rally showcased a level of coordination rarely seen in the opposition, with Kalonzo Musyoka hinting that the coalition is nearing a “Single Candidate” strategy to avoid a split vote in 2027.

The tour has intensified the local power struggle between Governor Simba Arati’s ODM faction and the new Matiang’i-led alliance. While Arati has traditionally been the region’s kingpin, the emergence of a “united” front featuring both Gachagua and Kalonzo has forced local leaders to choose sides. As the brigade heads into the final leg of their Nyamira tour, the burning cars in Keroka serve as a grim reminder that the road to 2027 will be paved with both massive popularity and dangerous volatility.
