GSU Officer Killed in Spear Attack Outside State House as Second Officer Dies Hours Later
Security agencies are investigating two shocking incidents that claimed the lives of two General Service Unit (GSU) officers within 24 hours in Nairobi.
The first incident occurred on Monday morning at 8:10 a.m. outside Gate D of State House Nairobi, where a man armed with a spear attempted to forcefully gain entry into the highly secured premises. According to police reports, the suspect confronted a GSU officer manning the gate and attempted to overpower him. A fierce struggle ensued before the officer was fatally stabbed.
The injured officer was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) by colleagues but was pronounced dead on arrival. The attacker was subdued and arrested at the scene. Upon interrogation, he reportedly claimed he had been “sent by satan”, though authorities have yet to determine his motive or mental state.
The suspect is now in police custody, and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have launched a full probe into the incident. Security around State House has since been heightened.
Second GSU Officer Killed at JKIA
In a separate attack hours later, another GSU officer was strangled to death by a civilian near the perimeter wall of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), where he had been deployed on patrol duties. Police say the suspect approached the officer before attacking him during a confrontation. The officer died at the scene from injuries sustained in the assault.
The attacker was arrested and is being held at a Nairobi police station pending further investigations.
Rising Concern Over Attacks on Security Personnel
The back-to-back killings have raised alarm within Kenya’s security agencies, as both victims were members of the elite GSU unit. Investigators are looking into whether the two incidents are connected or represent isolated cases of growing hostility against law enforcement officers.
Both suspects are expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are complete. The National Police Service has yet to issue a formal statement on the two deaths, but senior officers have described the incidents as “deeply concerning” and “unusual breaches of security”.
