Isaac Mwaura’s Controversial Rebrand of Ruto’s Nickname Backfires Spectacularly
The communications machinery of the Kenya Kwanza administration has kicked off a new, highly controversial public relations gambit—and it appears to have instantly backfired.
Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura attempted a bold move to neutralize a politically toxic nickname for President William Ruto. The moniker, ‘Githinji’—which translates to ‘butcher’ in the Kikuyu language—was popularized following the violent, anti-tax protests that tragically resulted in dozens of deaths.
The Attempted Rebrand
In a graphic posted online, Mwaura sought to redefine ‘Githinji’ not as a symbol of brutality or hardship, but as a marker of “leadership and resilience.” This move was a clear attempt to co-opt a derogatory term, strip it of its negative context (linked to alleged police brutality during the protests), and recast it as a sign of the President’s strength in the face of adversity.
The post, which rapidly amassed over 29,000 views, did little to achieve its intended effect.

Public and Political Backlash
The response was immediate and furious. Online users overwhelmingly rejected the spin, linking the term directly back to economic hardships and the deadly crackdown on demonstrators.
Crucially, the ‘Githinji’ nickname has already been weaponized by key political rivals. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has used the term to launch a searing attack on his former boss, accusing President Ruto of betraying his own supporters in the Mount Kenya region and presiding over a government disconnected from the plight of the common citizen.
Mwaura’s desperate rebrand only served to amplify this narrative, underscoring the deep and ongoing political tensions within the ruling coalition and between the administration and the public. The episode highlights the administration’s persistent struggle to control the narrative amid widespread public frustration and a worsening political feud among its erstwhile allies.
The use of an ethnically charged term associated with violence demonstrates the high-stakes, ruthless nature of the current political crisis in Kenya.
