Moses Kuria Launches Governor Bid, Names Aladwa as Running Mate

The 2027 Nairobi gubernatorial race has been dramatically reshaped with the formal declaration of Moses Kuria, the former Cabinet Secretary, as a challenger. In a bold political maneuver, Kuria—whose political base traditionally lies in neighboring Kiambu County—announced that he will seek Nairobi’s top seat, naming Makadara Member of Parliament George Aladwa as his running mate.

This pairing is a calculated move designed to achieve both ethnic and party balance in a deeply diverse capital city. Kuria, representing one ethnic group and often associated with a particular political bloc, has strategically chosen Aladwa, who represents a different ethnic group and remains a significant figure within the opposition. This ticket aims to unite disparate voter bases under a common banner.

The new political duo has anchored its campaign on tackling Nairobi’s most visible and frustrating failures: garbage buildup and crumbling infrastructure. Their pledge to clean up the city and fix its foundational issues echoes a locally resonant twist on a famous political slogan, indicating a focus on grassroots mobilization and essential services.

The entry of the Kuria-Aladwa ticket immediately intensifies pressure on the incumbent Governor, Johnson Sakaja. Sakaja is already facing a growing field of high-profile challengers, most notably Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.

Kuria’s candidacy is being viewed through two political lenses:

  1. Vote-Splitting Concern: Analysts suggest Kuria’s bid could fragment the votes that might otherwise consolidate around Sakaja, particularly within certain key communities.
  2. Community Consolidation: Conversely, some political observers believe the Kuria-Aladwa alliance could successfully consolidate support among their combined ethnic groups and appeal to Nairobians fed up with the status quo.

With the election still two years away, the dynamics are fluid. Kuria’s entry guarantees a more crowded and fiercely contested battle, ensuring that the Nairobi governor’s race remains wide open and highly unpredictable.
