UDA’s Leo Wamuthende Wins Mbeere North By-Election Amid Clashes

The political landscape of the vote-rich Mt. Kenya region has been given a crucial temperature check following the razor-thin victory of the United Democratic Alliance’s (UDA) Leo Wamuthende in the Mbeere North Constituency by-election. The final results, announced by the IEBC, confirmed Wamuthende as the new MP with 15,802 votes, narrowly defeating Democratic Party (DP) candidate Newton Karish, who secured 15,308 votes.

The slender 494-vote margin is not merely a number; it represents the intense, grassroots political pressure currently defining the region, and serves as a significant signal of shifting loyalties ahead of the 2027 polls.

The race was a clear proxy war between the ruling UDA, backed by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, and the opposition-leaning DP, whose candidate, Karish, enjoyed early leads across several polling stations. Karish’s initial momentum suggested a potential upset, fueled by localized anti-establishment sentiment. However, the coordinated campaigning and infrastructural support from the UDA machinery proved decisive, allowing Wamuthende to pull ahead as results from the final vote baskets were tallied. This comeback victory is being framed by the ruling party as a resounding endorsement of President Ruto’s development agenda.

Beyond the numbers, the Mbeere North contest was a spectacle of political tension. The election was characterized by:

  • Heated Scuffles: Reports of physical confrontations between rival camps underscore the desperation and high stakes involved in securing the seat.
  • Controversial Claims: Allegations of ballot stuffing and voter bribery were rampant, though they were quickly dismissed by IEBC officials who insisted on the transparency of the process, which was conducted under the watchful eyes of agents and observers.
  • Leader Confrontation: The most dramatic incident involved Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi confronting and scuffling with a voter. This high-profile spectacle highlighted the charged atmosphere and the personal investment top political figures placed on the outcome.

Despite the heavy political presence, the election suffered from a low turnout amid the unrest, suggesting voter apathy or skepticism that the outcome would change the prevailing political dynamics.

Wamuthende’s victory solidifies UDA’s presence in Embu County and sends a clear message that the party retains significant clout in the Mt. Kenya region, especially when leveraging the influence of powerful figures like CS Kindiki. However, Karish’s strong showing, particularly his early lead and the ability to mobilize over 15,000 votes, demonstrates that the DP and its allies remain a potent and united challenge. This by-election has effectively served as a stress test, confirming that the battle for the Mt. Kenya vote in the upcoming General Election will be intensely competitive, driven by narrow margins, and defined by the effectiveness of party machinery.
